
イワシの夏、フスカルドの夏。
イタリア・カラブリア州のフスカルドで行われる” Il Festival delle Alici di Fuscaldo / イワシ祭り”に、イワシを通じた文化交流ということで、僕の生まれである香川県観音寺市伊吹島のいりこを紹介するべく、参加をしました。フスカルドは美しい海から山にかけた丘に沿って成る歴史ある町。昔からイワシ漁がさかんで、”Festival delle Alici / イワシ祭り”は今年で町をあげての年に一度の大イベント。人口8,100人の町で今年は約10万人の来場者を記録しました。
The Summer of Anchovies, the Summer of Fuscaldo
I participated in the “Il Festival delle Alici di Fuscaldo” (Sardine Festival) in Fuscaldo, Calabria, Italy, to promote cultural exchange through sardines. As part of this initiative, I introduced iriko (dried sardines) from Ibukijima, my birthplace in Kanonji City, Kagawa Prefecture.
Fuscaldo is a historic town stretching from the beautiful sea up to the hills. It has long been known for its thriving sardine fishing, and the “Festival delle Alici” (Anchovy Festival) has become the town’s biggest annual event. Despite a population of just 8,100, this year the festival attracted approximately 100,000 visitors.

Friendship Exchange Dialogue between Mayor Saeki of Kan’onji City and Mayor Giacomo Fuscaldo
At the Fuscaldo City Hall branch, Mayor Saeki of Kan’onji City and Mayor Giacomo Fuscaldo held a dialogue to foster friendship and exchange. The meeting began with personal introductions, followed by discussions on the charms of their respective towns, local specialties, climate, and culture. The two leaders exchanged ideas and strengthened their ties. Anchovies serve as the bridge connecting these regions, and there is much hope for future collaboration.

❷シェフ エンツォ・バルビエーリによるクッキングショー
シェフ・エンツォバルビーリ氏のクッキングショーでのコラボレーションイベント。彼はカラブリア州で郷土料理の魅力と交流に尽力し、今回のフスカルト市観音寺市の繋ぎ役を担っていただきました。
コーディネーターの井谷氏とのトークショーを交えながら、いりこ(伊吹漁港協同組合)で出汁をとり、讃岐うどん(合田照一商店)をクッキングショー内で調理。日本酒(川鶴酒造)で乾杯のスタートから、市長をはじめ来場のの地元の方々に味わっていただきました。讃岐うどんの具として現地の郷土料理であるペペロー二クルスキ(赤パプリカのフリット)を加えたコラボレーションメニューをバルビエーリ氏から提案。いりこをそのままかじってもらいながら、現地では食文化にない「乾燥させたイワシ」を経験いただきました。日本酒を片手にいりこをかじる姿は日本で見る光景のようでした。
Cooking Show by Chef Enzo Barbieri
A collaborative event took place as part of a cooking show hosted by Chef Enzo Barbieri. Renowned for his efforts to promote Calabrian cuisine and cultural exchange, Chef Barbieri played a key role in fostering ties between Fuscaldo and Kan’onji City.
During the event, Chef Barbieri, together with coordinator Mr. Itani, hosted a talk show. They prepared a dish using dashi made from iriko (dried sardines from the Ibuki Fishery Cooperative) and Sanuki Udon from Goda Teruichi Store. The event began with a toast of sake from Kawatsuru Brewery, offering the audience, including the mayors and local attendees, a taste of the collaboration.
Chef Barbieri introduced a special menu combining Sanuki Udon with peperoni cruschi (fried red peppers), a traditional dish from the local Calabrian cuisine. Attendees were also invited to experience iriko by eating the dried sardines directly—an unfamiliar concept in the region’s food culture. Holding a glass of sake in one hand and nibbling on iriko felt like a scene straight out of Japan.
また、食育や地域文化をテーマにした伊吹島紹介ショートムービー「イブキノミライ」(制作/伊吹島プロジェクト)の伊語版を、街の象徴・歴史的建造物の壁に映し観賞いただきました。
Additionally, a short film titled “Ibuki no Mirai” (produced by the Ibuki Island Project), focusing on food education and regional culture, was screened in its Italian version. The film was projected onto the walls of a historic building, a symbol of the town, offering attendees an immersive viewing experience.
❸伊吹島紹介パネル展示
イベントステージ横にあるギャラリースペースにて行われた、フスカルドの漁業を紹介する展示。そこのスペースの一部にて伊吹島、いりこ漁、歴史などを紹介するパネルプレゼンテーションを常設で行った。現地の住民や漁師さんからから、文化の違いなどや観音寺の場所などなど、興味深く質問を受けました。
Ibuki Island Introduction Panel Exhibition
Alongside the event stage, a gallery space featured an exhibition introducing Fuscaldo’s fishing industry. Part of the space was dedicated to a permanent panel presentation about Ibuki Island, including its iriko (dried sardine) fishing, history, and culture. Local residents and fishermen showed great interest, asking engaging questions about cultural differences and the location of Kan’onji City.
開会式、鼓笛隊パレードで盛大なフェスティバルが開幕。メインステージでは、招待市長の挨拶や本の出版報告、各イベントなどを行う。また、プロジェクションマッピングなどの先端技術を用いたカタクチイワシのプレゼンテーション。
The festival opened with great fanfare, featuring a parade by a marching band. On the main stage, invited mayors delivered speeches, and announcements were made, including the publication of a new book and details about various events. Additionally, advanced technologies like projection mapping were used to present the story and significance of anchovies, offering an engaging and immersive experience.
約70を超える屋台では、カタクチイワシ・海産料理を中心に多くの来訪客が舌を鳴らす。カラブリア州の郷土料理や地元アルコールの店も多く、フスカルド市の祭りを超えて近隣地域を巻き込んだ大々的なイベントであることを肌で感じる。常設も含め、街のあらゆるところにカタクチイワシ漁の歴史や伝統を伝える装飾やプレゼンテーション。カタクチイワシという市民の大事なシンボル・恩恵を、今回の観音寺市との交流も含め、大事に未来へ繋げながら挑戦・発展をしていこうとする姿勢を感じました。
At over 70 food stalls, visitors indulged in a variety of dishes centered around anchovies and seafood. Many stalls also featured Calabrian specialties and local alcoholic beverages, creating a lively event that extended beyond Fuscaldo City to involve neighboring regions.
Throughout the town, both temporary and permanent installations showcased the history and traditions of anchovy fishing. Decorations and presentations emphasized the importance of anchovies as a vital symbol and resource for the community. The event conveyed a strong sense of pride and determination to preserve and develop this heritage, while also embracing new exchanges—such as the collaboration with Kan’onji City—for the future.


カラブリア州コゼンツァ県フスカルド
フスカルドはカラブリア州ティレニア海沿いにある町で、海岸のフスカルド・マリーナから丘陵地帯を経て、標高350メートルの歴史地区、さらには1000メートルに達する山地へと続く多彩な地形が魅力です。歴史的にはスピネッリ家の宮殿が重要で、美しい庭園や階段が特徴です。人口は約8100人で、夏には観光客で賑わい、美食と自然を楽しめます。漁業が盛んで、特にイワシ料理が名物です。イワシのマリネやグリルは美食フェアや祭りでも人気を集め、地域の伝統と文化が年間を通じて息づいています。
Fuscaldo, Province of Cosenza, Calabria
Fuscaldo is a town in the Calabria region, located along the Tyrrhenian Sea. Its diverse landscape extends from the coastal Fuscaldo Marina, through hilly areas, to the historic district at an elevation of 350 meters, and further into mountainous regions reaching up to 1,000 meters. Historically, the Spinelli family palace is a notable landmark, known for its beautiful gardens and stairways.
With a population of around 8,100, Fuscaldo becomes bustling with tourists during the summer, offering a blend of gourmet experiences and natural beauty. Fishing is a key industry, and sardine-based dishes are a local specialty. Marinated and grilled sardines are especially popular at food fairs and festivals, where the region’s traditions and culture are celebrated throughout the year.
