“Traveling with Tradition” – Tabi Shoes Created by Artisans from Tokyo Yuzen and the Shoemaking Town of Asakusa
I was responsible for the promotional direction and printed leather production of the “Tabi Shoes,” a collaboration between Wazabi Co., Ltd., a leather product manufacturer that crafts goods in Higashi Asakusa, and the Tokyo Yuzen artist group “Somemoyou.” These shoes provide the barefoot-like sensation of walking.

“‘Travel Shoes’ that Connect the World through Yuzen”
Connecting the world through Yuzen. The “Travel Shoes that Connect the World through Yuzen” are created by the Tokyo Yuzen artisan group “Somemoyou.” These exquisite items are proudly “MADE IN TOKYO,” crafted with high-quality printed lamb leather in collaboration with the shoemaking artisans of Higashi-Asakusa, a town known for its footwear. Yuzen is a traditional dyeing technique where artisans hand-paint designs on pure silk (Kinu) and dye the kimono. The process of delicately applying colors, stroke by stroke, to the patterned areas is expressed with the verb “to yuzen.” Inspired by the desire to connect with the world and add color to everyday life, the concept is “Connecting the World through Yuzen.”

Yatagarasu

An original work by Miyuki Ohno. Known internationally, it was also a popular piece at exhibitions in France. Ohno’s works, which inherit the use of colors from her mentor, Norihito Sakai, are characterized by subdued, grayish tones with fewer colors, giving them a refined and muted aesthetic.

Hokusai – The Wave

Wishing to share this with people abroad, we selected “Katsushika Hokusai” based on what everyone envisions when they think of “the image of Japan.” Among Hokusai’s works, we chose “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” from Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji because it is well-known and can be displayed in a wide, horizontal format.

Feel free to ask if you need further edits!

Edo Beauty and Somei-Yoshino

The two ukiyo-e designs are based on works by “Utagawa Tsukimaro”: Chōjiya Uchi Karauta Nishikio and Teika Kyō Goshiki Waka Aka (selection by Kumiko Machida). When laying out the designs on the shoe uppers, we selected the original vertical compositions and conducted prototypes to ensure that the faces wouldn’t align with the seams. Ultimately, we decided on a collage. The Somei-Yoshino cherry blossoms paired with the ukiyo-e are original works by Ohno. The combination of ukiyo-e and cherry blossoms brings out a vibrant elegance.
